Meet Judge Randy Johnson

Judge Randy Johnson was elected in 2022 and looks forward to the honor and opportunity to continue serving the citizens of Collin County as the elected presiding Judge of Collin County Court at Law 5.

Judge Johnson's record of accomplishment, proven experience and professionalism prior to taking the bench is the result of his work ethic and dedication to the law. 

Judge Johnson is a fifth generation Texan, has lived in Collin County since 1985, and had 38 years of experience litigating civil and criminal cases in the trial and appellate courts prior to taking the bench.  

Judge Johnson and his wife, Kelly, have been married for over 44 years, are the proud parents of Ashley and Travis, and are long time members of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas.    

Prior to taking the bench, Judge Johnson had extensive experience in all areas of the law heard by Collin County Court at Law 5.  In addition to handling over 125 civil and criminal appeals, Judge Johnson tried numerous civil and criminal jury trials to verdict, including civil trials in Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Erath, Ellis, Grayson, Harris, Hunt, Johnson, Navarro, Parker, Tarrant and Yoakum Counties.  He has also served as a court-appointed mediator, guardian ad litem and special commissioner in numerous cases.

While in law school, Judge Johnson served as president of the Board of Barristers, participated on two national moot court teams, and was awarded the Order of Barristers which (an award given to graduating law students and practicing lawyers who demonstrate exceptional skill in trial advocacy, oral advocacy, and brief writing).  After graduating from law school in 1984, Judge Johnson started his legal career as an assistant district attorney under Henry Wade in the Dallas County District Attorney's Office, first in the Appellate Division, and later in the Trial Division.  

Judge Johnson continues to be certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in the areas of Civil Trial Law, Personal Injury Trial Law and Texas Workers' Compensation Law.  Judge Johnson was first certified in Civil Trial and Personal Injury Law in 1995 and has been certified in Workers' Compensation Law since 2004, the first year that specialty area was first offered. Out of 110,000 plus lawyers that are licensed to practice in Texas, less than 10,000 are Board Certified, and of those, less than 1000 have multiple certifications according to TBLS.  

Prior to taking the bench, Judge Johnson was AV-Rated which is the highest rating given by Martindale-Hubbell Attorney Peer Ratings Review and is for attorneys who are ranked at the highest level of professional excellence for their legal expertise, communication skills, and ethical standards by their peers.  

Prior to taking the bench, Judge Johnson was a frequent speaker and presenter at continuing education seminars and shared the breadth and depth of his experience as a mentor to other attorneys, including three which have gone on to serve as administrative law judges.

Since taking the bench, Judge Johnson has continued to serve as a speaker and presenter, including serving as a faculty member of the Collin County Bar Association Annual Trial Academy in 2024 and 2025. Judge Johnson has also continued to serve as member of the Texas Pattern Jury Charge Greenbook Committee.
